And the Scientist said unto the Clone, “What is this that thou hast done?” And the Clone smiled at him sweetly saying “Serpent beguiled me, and I did eat”.
And the Scientist turned on Serpent, saying “This is the last straw you useless hop-head. I want you out of my laboratory by tomorrow. And I shall make sure you never get to work in any respectable scientific establishment again”.
Turning then to the Gardener and the Clone he spake unto them:
“And you two can look for another job too. I hear there’s often agricultural work to be found for immigrant labour. It’ll be no holiday, believe me, but it’s no better than you deserve for disobeying me. You had better cover yourselves properly first; here, take these skins. Later you can slaughter some beasts of the field for their pelts; it will be good practice for you.”
So did the Scientist drive them forth out of the Garden. For he feared that they discover more, even that the other, that Tree he had named Arbor vividus, should prolong their being. For it was his wish that they should return to the dust from whence they came.
